Mid-week tipple: fruity summer wines at bargain prices

Each week John Wilson selects two wines for you to try at home. This week: Reid Seiber Wachau Grüner Veltliner Reserve 2015, Austria and De Bertoli GS Pinot Noir 2015, Yarra Valley, Australia

Reid Seiber Wachau Grüner Veltliner Reserve 2015, Austria
€8.99 from Aldi

The Aldi Wine Festival started last Sunday, but there should still be plenty of wine left. This wine is one of a number of bargains. Normally you would expect to pay a minimum of €15 for a Grüner Veltliner from the premium Wachau region. Prices go up to €50 or more for the best. I am not claiming this wine is as good, but for €8.99, it is an absolute steal with its the zippy clean fresh pear and apple fruits.

De Bertoli GS Pinot Noir 2015, Yarra Valley, Australia
€10.99 from Aldi

Steve Webber is chief winemaker at de Bertoli, one of the premium wineries in the Yarra valley, close to Melbourne. He is an interesting guy, and a dab hand at producing really good elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, amongst other things. This is not their finest wine, but at €10.99 it is definitely worth a punt. Aromatic and light with juicy red cherry fruits, this is a very gluggable wine. Try it with seared breast of duck.
