Two classic wines this week from Lidl. White Burgundy and red Bordeaux are two well-known traditional wine choices. White Burgundy, or Bourgogne as it appears on the label, is made from the chardonnay grape 99 per cent of the time. Depending on where it is grown it varies from light and refreshing to rich and textured in style.

Bordeaux is typically made from merlot, cabernet sauvignon, or a blend of the two. Merlot provides the ripe rounded fruit, cabernet the tannins and body. The Château Pey de Pont is 53 per cent merlot and 36 per cent cabernet sauvignon, along with a few other varieties. This wine comes from the Médoc, one of the better subregions of Bordeaux.
