Wines for the Weekend: There is more to the country than Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

There is more to New Zealand than Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. While their flagship wine is enjoyed around the world, New Zealand has other grape varieties and other wine producing regions too. Today two ‘other’ wines from Lidl.

Hawke’s Bay is on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. As well as wine, it is famous for its beaches and art deco architecture. It is New Zealand’s oldest wine region, first established in 1851, and the second largest producing area too. While Marlborough is rightly famous for sauvignon blanc, critics argue that Hawke’s Bay produces the finest chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and merlot too. Central Otago on the South Island is one of the most southerly vineyards in the world. Central, as its known locally, vies with Martinborough to produce the best Pinot Noir in New Zealand.
