Best Coast’s 2010 debut was a wonderful incursion into sunny- side-up, scuffled Californian indiepop.
For its follow-up, the LA duo enlisted producer Jon Brion to smooth out their rough edges – to their detriment.
Number three finds a middle ground, with the Weezer-esque grunge riffs of Feeling OK and the lo-fi Bangles- do-pop-punk swagger of Heaven Sent tussling with softly warped, woozy balladry, as heard on the excellent title track.
In between, Bethany Cosentino continues to draw influence from 60s girl groups (as Wasted Time demonstrates), while the lyrical content remains preoccupied with lost love.
True, it’s a little one-note - but if you like Best Coast’s disconsolate approach to lovelorn indie rock with a retro strut, this album won’t disappoint.
