David McMillan has left Dundalk to sign for Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The striker – who scored 23 goals for the Lilywhites last season when they were pipped to both the league and cup titles by Cork City – will officially join the Scottish side when the transfer window opens in January.

"David's a player I've known for quite some time and I knew he was coming out of contract and felt the time was right to make a move," St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright told the club's official website.

“He’s scored all types of goals — left foot, right foot, headers — and he’s done it at various levels including European club football, so he has experience of a higher level than just League of Ireland. He’s a hard worker, a good age and without doubt capable of making the step-up.”

St Johnstone are currently seventh in the Scottish top tier and include fellow Irish players Joe Shaughnessy and Graham Cummins in their squad.

In other news, champions Cork City have announced that Johnny Dunleavy has signed a new contract with the club, saying "I am delighted to sign back again. We knew that it was happening, but it was just a case of finding the right time to sit down and get everything sorted out and signed. Now, it's time to get the head down and focus on the rehab for another while."

“It’s never nice to sit and watch, I’m the worst watcher in the world, but everything is going according to plan so far and I’ll come back bigger and better than ever.”

“John recruits well every year and this year is no different. The boys that have come in are quality players and will add competition. It’s exciting; all of a sudden, everyone is gunning for us which is a different kind of pressure, but that is the way you would want it. As a footballer, you want success and you want trophies. It will be tough to replicate this year, but that will be our aim.”
