Drogheda United 1 Cork City 2
Cork managed to silence their critics somewhat as they scored two away from home for the first time this season in a 2-1 win over a dogged Drogheda United at United Park on Friday night.
The goals coming in a two-minute period in the first half as first Billy Dennehy hit the net followed by Kieran Djilali. Cork were 13 minutes away from setting a club record seven straight league clean sheets when Lloyd Buckley pulled one back for the Boynesiders.
Ross Gaynor broke down the left and the Ardee native floated in a cross which just dipped over the head of Alan Byrne to the waiting Dennehy who headed home from just four yards out for the opening goal on 17 minutes.
Dennehy then turned provider as his corner skimmed off the head of Mick Daly at the back post where the ball dropped and seemed to hit off Djilali and ricochet into the goal to give Cork a two-goal cushion two minutes later
John Kavanagh dominated the right wing and could have added a third as the full back turned and curled a shot to the back post which was acrobatically turned behind by the Drogheda keeper.
Stephen Maher had the best chances for Drogheda, the midfielder saw a long range effort saved by McNulty minutes after blasting over from six yards out.
Carl Walshe flashed a header wide just after the re-start before forcing a great save from McNulty when he was played through and shot from inside the box, again only to be denied by the keeper.
Drogheda set up a grandstand finish as Seán Brennan fired a corner to the back post where 18-year-old Lloyd Buckley powered a header home to pull one back, his first ever senior goal. Drogheda threw everything forward in the final minutes but couldn’t find a leveller.
