James McCarthy and Glenn Whelan have both been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland at Celtic Park tomorrow night.

Stoke City midfielder Whelan had made a remarkable return to training after fracturing his leg in Ireland’s 1-1 draw against Germany four weeks ago but the trip to Celtic Park has come too soon and he will return to his club for further treatment.

McCarthy injured his hamstring in Everton’s 1-1 draw at Sunderland on Saturday and was unable to take part in training at Malahide’s Gannon Park this week.

McCarthy will also head back to his club for treatment.
