Danny Welbeck in line for Arsenal debut, Chelsea’s Diego Costa in a race to prove fitness

Arsenal (7) v Man City (4)

Forward Danny Welbeck could make his Arsenal debut and midfielder Aaron Ramsey (ankle) will be assessed. Captain Mikel Arteta (ankle), David Ospina (thigh) and Kieran Gibbs (hamstring) are back in full training and playmaker Mesut Ozil should be available but Theo Walcott (knee), Serge Gnabry (knee) and Olivier Giroud (foot) are out.

City midfielder Fernando (groin) and striker Stevan Jovetic (hamstring) are out but defender Eliaquim Mangala and on-loan midfielder Frank Lamprd are in contention for debuts after building up their general fitness. Captain Vincent Kompany is fit after coming through Belgium’s recent friendly against Australia unscathed despite concerns over a calf injury.

Chelsea (1) v Swansea (2)

Striker Diego Costa will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness after withdrawing from Spain duty with a hamstring injury — but Blues boss Jose Mourinho may opt to hand Loic Remy his debut ahead of Wednesday's Champions League fixture with Schalke. Mourinho has no other injury problems.

Wilfried Bony was part of the Ivory Coast side which lost an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Cameroon on Wednesday and Swans boss Garry Monk will consider the effects of that long journey on the striker before deciding whether to name an unchanged side — Bafetimbi Gomis stands by. Midfielder Leon Britton (knee) remains sidelined.

Crystal Palace (19) v Burnley (20)

Palace’s club-record signing James McArthur is set to make his debut and Kevin Doyle and Zeki Fryers are also in line to make their first starts, but Andrew Johnson is still gaining fitness and is unlikely to feature. Marouane Chamakh is out with a hamstring injury but Joe Ledley is available after coming on as a substitute for Wales in Andorra on Tuesday.

Burnley’s three deadline day signings come into contention. George Boyd has worked with Sean Dyche’s group during the international break but the boss has hinted Nathaniel Chalobah and Michael Keane are unlikely to start. Danny Ings has recovered from illness so fellow striker Sam Vokes (knee) is set to be the only absentee.

Villa manager Paul Lambert could give on-loan Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley his debut. The Scot has doubts over a couple of unnamed players, while strikers Christian Benteke (Achilles) and Libor Kozak (broken leg) remain sidelined.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman will give Sadio Mane every chance to return from international duty in time — the striker had to detour via Ghana on his return to England after Senegal’s 2-0 midweek victory in Botswana, due to work permit regulations. Elsewhere, injured front men Lloyd Isgrove and Sam Gallagher miss out for the home side.

Midfielders Jack Colback and Cheick Tiote will return for Newcastle, Colback was forced to withdraw from England duty with a calf problem while Tiote is available after proving his fitness following a hamstring injury. Papiss Cisse (knee), Siem de Jong (thigh), Rolando Aarons (hamstring) and Facundo Ferreyra (back) are out.

On-loan winger Oussama Assaidi is in contention, while the condition of forward Mame Biram Diouf, who has been away on international duty with Senegal, will be assessed.

A trio of new signings come into the reckoning for Leicester. Defender Danny Simpson, along with strikers Tom Lawrence and Nick Powell — the latter on loan from Manchester United — are in the squad. Defender Matthew Upson (foot) is out and although midfielder Matty James is training again after a shin injury, this game comes too soon.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez makes late checks on midfielder Leon Osman (calf) and striker Samuel Eto’o (groin). Midfielder Ross Barkley (knee) is still a month away from full fitness but striker Arouna Kone (knee) and defender Bryan Oviedo (broken leg) are closer to a return after playing in a midweek behind-closed-doors game against Stoke.

QPR midfielder Joey Barton faces a late fitness test on a hamstring strain. Boss Harry Redknapp has a number of players carrying knocks but does not expect many absentees, while Sandro and Niko Kranjcar are primed for debuts.
