Tributes paid to former champion jockey Ryan ‘Buster’ Parnell

London born won the Irish 2,000 Guineas twice as well as the Irish 1,000 Guineas

The former champion jockey and triple-classic winning rider Ryan 'Buster' Parnell has died. He was 83.

London born Parnell was champion jockey in Ireland in 1969. He won the Irish 2,000 Guineas twice, on Atherstone Wood (1967) and Mistigo (1968) as well as the 1975 Irish 1,000 Guineas on Miralla.

Other big races successes included the 1973 King Edward VII Stakes on the Dermot Weld trained Klairvimy.

“He was a very good jockey, a very talented rider and a colourful character,” Weld said on Monday.

Parnell retired from race riding in 1986. He passed away at his home in Copenhagen.
