Top jockey Séamus Heffernan was in trouble for his use of the whip again at Gowran Park on Monday when getting a 10-day suspension for excessive use.

Heffernan finished runner-up on While You’re Up in a handicap behind the winner Derry Lad. Afterwards the veteran rider accepted he had used his whip excessively. Having considered his record the stewards suspended him for 10 days.

It’s not the first time this season that Heffernan has breached the whip rules at Gowran.

In June he picked up a six day ban at the Co Kilkenny track and in a remarkable step for one of the most successful classic jockeys of the modern era he was also referred by the stewards to the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE) for “one day’s tuition on the correct use of the whip.”
