Madeline Perry brought her career on the professional circuit to an end in fine style, the former world number three beating Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana in straight games to win the Irish Open at Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club.

The 38-year-old announced last week that the tournament would be her last on the world tour, which she joined 16 years ago, but she will represent Ireland next month at the European Team Championships in Denmark and fulfil club fixtures in England and Italy before her retirement from the sport.

Fernandes, ranked 20 in the world, took an early lead in the opening game, but Perry came back back to take it 11-8 before closing out the match, 11-5, 11-9, the sixth time she has taken the Irish Open title.

The men's final was won by Egypt's Ali Farag who beat France's Lucas Serme in five sets.
