Katie Taylor has been forced to sit out the 2015 National Elite Championships due to injury.

The Olympic champion is still recovering from an injured left wrist she sustained on her way to a fifth world title in South Korea in November and as a result did not weigh in this morning.

“Would love to have boxed but injured wrist from world championships didn’t heal quick enough, hence the reason I didn’t weigh in,” the Bray boxer tweeted today.

Her decision leaves the 60kg division open for dispute between Louise Donohoe (Geesalla BC, Mayo) and Debbie O’Reilly (Olympic BC, Galway).

Taylor has been unopposed in previous years.

Limerick's Moira McElligot and Athlone's Cheyanne O'Neill (57kg) will get the championships underway at the National Stadium tonight from 7pm.

Former European Elite champion Ray Moylette (64kg) and London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Olympians Adam Nolan and John Joe Joyce (both 69kg) will also be in action.

Sixteen quarter-final bouts will be decided this evening.
