Tipperary's Greg Broderick, riding the Irish Sport Horse MHS Going Global, has qualified for the second round of the individual show jumping competition at the Olympic Games in Rio following Sunday's opening contest at Deodora Olympic Park.

Broderick and the 10-year-old gelding looked to be heading for a foot-perfect round and were clear coming to the last line of fences. The pair knocked the first and second part of the troublesome double just one fence from home to finish on eight faults. Brazilian course designer Guilherme Jorge set a stiff test for this opener, with the water fence at seven and that final double (11ab) causing plenty of problems.

Twenty-four combinations were clear including the reigning individual champion, Steve Guerdat from Switzerland and his successful mount from London 2012, Nino des Buissonnets.

The hosts, Brazil, had three home on zero scores as did Germany while those nations who had two riders clear within the time were France, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and The Netherlands. Britain, winners of team Gold four years ago, recorded one clear through John Whitaker on Ornellaia. Eight combinations failed to finish including France's Penelope Leprevost who parted company from Flora de Mariposa.

Belgian rider Nicola Philippaerts was disqualified today - unconfirmed reports say this was due to ‘overuse of the spurs’. Likewise, The Netherlands’ Jur Vrieling was seemingly disqualified for ‘overuse of spurs or whip’.

Faults accrued on Sunday do not count towards the team results but do determine the team starting order for Tuesday and do count for the individual rankings. Only the top 35 riders at the conclusion of the team competition on Wednesday will go through to the individual showdown on Friday.
