Mayweather to defend WBC title against Guerrero

Five-division champion to put welterweight belt on the line in May

Floyd Mayweather will put his WBC welterweight title on the line when he goes toe-to-toe with challenger Robert Guerrero in Las Vegas on May 4th.

Mayweather, the undefeated eight-time, five division and reigning WBC world champion will take on the 29-year-old southpaw at the MGM Grand on the top of a bill which will also see WBC featherweight world champion Daniel Ponce de Leon make his first title defence against Abner Mares.

“I know Guerrero has been campaigning to fight me for quite a while now and I am happy to give him his opportunity,” Mayweather said today. “His name is mentioned among the other great champions in boxing today and that means he has proven himself in the ring.

“He will now have to prove himself against me, which is a whole other story.

“I’m excited for the challenge and fully expect a good, tough fight from him. However, I do expect the same outcome for him as all of the others who have challenged me before. Forty two have tried, 42 have failed. He will be number 43.”

Guerrero, a former IBF super-featherweight, interim WBA and WBO lightweight and two-time IBF featherweight champion, is ready to take on his toughest challenge when he faces fellow American Mayweather.

He said: “Nothing has ever come easy to me and that mental fortitude has prepared me to defeat the one fighter everyone perceives to be the pound-for-pound king in Floyd Mayweather.

“When we lock eyes across the ring on fight night he’s going to feel the presence of a man preordained for greatness.

“The time is now to show the world why I’m destined to dethrone Floyd and when I come out victorious on May 4, the whole world will know I’m a man who willed his way to victory by putting God first in his life.”
