All-Ireland SHC qualifier round 2
Cork v Wexford, Semple Stadium, 5.0
[Live, Sky Sports].
Judged on a form-line through Dublin, this doesn’t appear to offer much hope for Wexford, who lost by 13 to the side beaten by three by Cork. Last week’s win over Offaly was however an encouraging performance by Liam Dunne’s side in that they were clearly superior and pushed on despite the controversy of the penalty goal not awarded.
Cork, after weeks of existential angst, have put themselves in a position where they might have a shot at an All-Ireland semi-final.
Their forwards were as expected the difference between them and Dublin, as Alan Cadogan’s goal was part of a full-forward line yield that contributed 1-12 from play.
They also had to withstand a late charge by 14-man Dublin and held out well with a good scoring riposte at the end.
Wexford were lively, though. Conor McDonald and Podge Doran's scoring put them firmly in the driving seat whereas the impressive pace and movement of David Dunne also had an impact.
On the evidence to date Cork may well have their hands full if Wexford can adjust their game from the comforts of home to a venue they traditionally don’t like.
The difficulty will be that whereas Offaly with wind advantage and opportunities weren’t able to make a commensurate impact. Cork won’t be as remiss.
