Séamus Power, the great Waterford hurler will be laid to rest on Tuesday, having passed away at the weekend aged 86. An All-Ireland winner with the county, he also won three Munster, one NHL and five Railway Cup medals.

In a life that was dedicated to the GAA at all levels he will be most vividly remembered on the field for the dramatic goal that took the 1959 All-Ireland final to replay, which Waterford won.

Writing in this newspaper Patrick Mehigan (under his pen name Pat O) said of the drawn match that Waterford’s “midfield pair Phil Grimes and Séamus Power held the balance of power at centre” and described the late intervention that saved the day for the county as follows:

“In the dying moments Waterford fought back with spirit and Séamus Power trapped a winging ball on the Waterford right, to swerve through and shot a perfect ball shoulder high. It beat Ollie Walsh to the net and set the teams level 10 seconds from the end.”

In the replay, he was described as “putting in some really fine hurling at centre”.

Séamus Power won numerous county titles, both football and hurling with the famous Waterford city club Mount Sion, which he also served as an administrator. After his playing career he became a notable referee and took charge of both legs of the 1965 league final between Tipperary and New York, won on aggregate by Tipp.

He also involved himself with Waterford county teams as trainer and selector and also served as a Railway Cup selector with Munster.

In later years he represented the county at Central Council and together with his All-Ireland partner, Phil Grimes, he was chosen at centrefield on both the 1984 Waterford Centenary Team and also the county’s Team of the Millennium in 2000.
