In the 31st minute Antrim catapulted themselves back into the game with the game’s first goal, Paul Shiels drawing on a rebound to cut the gap to two points, 0-9 to 1-4. The O’Moore men replied immediately through Charlie Dwyer, who also added the last score of the half to give his side a 0-11 to 1-5 advantage going into the break.

Antrim had the wind advantage in the second half and within five minutes of the restart the Saffrons were level with three Shiels frees tying the scores at 1-8 to 0-11. Antrim were beginning to get on top but a goal from Paddy Purcell put Laois back in the driving seat. The midfielder’s driving run ended with a low shot to McGarry’s left.

On 63 minutes Dwyer slotted over his third of the day to put Laois five to the good, and although three unanswered scores from Shiels, Niall McKenna and Michael Bradley brought Antrim to within two points, Paddy Whelan and PJ Scully tacked on insurance scores for the visitors.
