Offaly's push for promotion took another positive step as they defeated Waterford by seven points at a perishing Carriganore yesterday afternoon.
Second-half goals from Brian Connor and Graham Guilfoyle ultimately broke the Waterford resistance.
Despite playing into a strong wind, Emmet McDonnell’s team went in 0-9 to 0-8 ahead at half-time, having remarkably failed to register a single wide in the opening 35 minutes.
Full-forward Ken Casey led the way for the Faithful with six points, four of them from placed balls.
Waterford’s Tony Grey excelled in a more advanced attacking role, picking off three excellent first-half points.
Both sides exchanged points before Liam Ó Lionáin fisted home a 42nd minute goal to edge Waterford ahead. But the hosts would add only two further points to their total, as Offaly finished much the stronger side. Captain Niall McNamee’s introduction after the break helped to ensure they made the trip home a most satisfying one.
