That’s all from me for today. Gordon Manning’s Dublin v Derry report and Ian O’Riordan’s report on Galway v Armagh will be with us shortly.
We’ll be back with another GAA blog tomorrow. Until then, oíche mhaith.
FT – Waterford 2-21 Kilkenny 2-18
The Déise minors survive a late surge from Kilkenny to get to the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Final, where they’ll meet the winner of tomorrow’s second semi-final between Clare and Cork.
Not to forget about the minors – Waterford lead Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Minor Hurling semi-final, 2-15 to 1-14.
They’re midway through the second half at Wexford Park.
That’s Group 2 and Group 4 all wrapped up. Here’s what the results mean in terms of championship progression:
Group 2
Meath – 5 points (quarter-finals)
Kerry – 4 points (preliminary quarter-finals)
Cork – 2 points (preliminary quarter-finals)
Roscommon – 1 point (out)
Group 4
Armagh – 4 points (quarter-finals)
Dublin – 4 points (preliminary quarter-finals)
Galway – 3 points (preliminary quarter-finals)
Derry – 1 point (out)
In the last of our 6.30pm throw-ins, Kildare have beaten Offaly to progress to the Tailteann Cup semi-finals alongside Fermanagh.
FT – Kildare 1-17 Offaly 0-19
70 MINS: Derry push hard to make up the difference but Dublin hold out to join Galway in the preliminary quarter-finals.
FT – Dublin 0-22 Derry 0-20
70 MINS: Armagh’s Tomás McCormack is pulled for a foul on Galway’s Paul Conroy. Shane Walsh again steps up for the free. He sends it over to give Galway the one-point win.
FT – Galway 2-22 Armagh 0-27
69 MINS: Into the final minute at Breffni Park and Armagh have pulled level with a point from Shane McPartlan.
The hooter sounds with Galway in possession so they’ll go for a score.
Galway 2-21 Aramgh 0-27
64 MINS: Dublin nearly put the game to bed in Newry but a frantic Derry defence clears the ball off the goal line.
Con O’Callaghan fists another score over the bar and Dublin are four points ahead.
Dublin 0-22 Derry 0-18
65 MINS: Ethan Rafferty nails another two-point free for Armagh and the sides are level at Breffni Park.
Galway 2-20 Armagh 0-26
60 MINS: Derry’s Brendan Rogers finds a way in on goal but he skims it across the face of the Dublin goal.
Dublin 0-21 Derry 0-18
58 MINS: Shane Walsh steps up for another two-point free but he chances a trick shot back to his midfield. Armagh intercept and it ends in a point from Andrew Murnin. Costly mistake for Galway but Walsh then makes amends with a point to restore Galway’s one-point lead.
Galway 2-18 Armagh 0-23
56 MINS: Another goal for Galway. Rob Finnerty comes in off the right to drive a low shot into the bottom left corner.
Fourteen minutes left at Breffni Park and the Tribesmen lead by the minimum.
Galway 2-17 Armagh 0-22
48 MINS: Derry trail by five in Newry after another point from Con O’Callaghan.
Dublin 0-20 Derry 0-15
51 MINS: And just like that Galway are ahead.
Two points in the space of a minute, supplied by Rob Finnerty and Cillian McDaid, give them the lead.
Turbit misses down the other end for Armagh, but McQuillan makes no such mistake
Galway 1-16 Armagh 0-17
49 MINS: Things are heating up at Breffni Park as Galway have worked their way back into the game.
A Ross McQuillan point puts two between the sides and a bit of handbags after the score ends with Galway’s Seán Kelly being shown a yellow.
When play resumes, Galway grab possession and take it up field where they draw a free. Shane Walsh steps up and kicks the two-pointer to level it.
Galway 1-14 Armagh 0-17
39 MINS: Andrew Murnin is causing trouble for the Dublin defence. He gets a nice run in on goal but Dublin swarm to force him to turn off the left, having to settle for a point instead.
Dublin 0-15 Derry 0-14
35 MINS: They’re back in action in Newry and Con O’Callaghan has started the second half just as he did the first. A point from the Cuala man puts Dessie Farrell’s side back in front.
Dublin 0-14 Derry 0-13
38 MINS: GOAL FOR GALWAY. Seán Maher nets after patient play from Rob Finnerty found Dylan McHugh on the run who dispatched to Maher to palm the ball past Ethan Rafferty.
Shane Walsh follows up with a point to cut Armagh’s lead to two points.
Galway 1-10 Armagh 0-15
And with that, Galway and Armagh are back under way. Big half needed from the Tribesmen.
Peter Cooke opens the scoring with a point for Galway.
Galway 0-8 Armagh 0-15
Just as they return to the field at Breffni Park, here’s a refresher on what the different results would spell for Group 4:
Armagh’s four points has them two ahead of Dublin, and three ahead of Galway and Derry. A win or a draw in Breffni Park would see the reigning champs top the group on six points. Although a loss would put them at risk of being caught on points by Dublin (should Dessie Farrell’s side beat Derry), their head-to-head result (Armagh beat Dublin in round two) means the Orchard County would come out on top.
The other three counties, meanwhile, are in a battle for survival. A win for Dublin against Derry would see them safely through to the preliminary quarter-finals, as would a draw, but a loss would leave them at the mercy of the Galway result. Should Dublin lose and Galway win, the Dubs are out and the Tribesmen progress.
If both fixtures end in draws then Dublin would take second behind Armagh and Galway would pip Derry with their healthier points difference as the side drew when they met in round two.
Gordon Manning has this for us from Páirc Esler:
It’s all level here in Newry at half-time; Dublin 0-13 Derry 0-13.
It has been a brilliant game of football so far. Peadar Ó Cofaigh Byrne is enjoying his best ever display for Dublin in the middle of the field, Derry have no answer for the big Cuala midfielder.
Ciarán Kilkenny is also winning a huge amount of possession around the middle of the field and it is an area Derry will have to improve on in the second half.
Shane McGuigan has been faultless in front of the posts for Derry and curled over his third two-pointer of the game with the last kick of the first half to send the sides in level.
Super stuff so far from both teams, high-octane tempo with lots of big plays. It’s set up for an epic second half.
It’s also half-time in the Tailteann Cup quarter-final in Newbridge where Kildare lead by two points.
HT – Kildare 1-7 Offaly 0-8
35 MINS: They’re a bit behind in Newry where the first-half has just finished.
A two-point free from Cormac Costello looked to have given Dublin the lead for the break, but a similar chance was called for Derry just shy of the hooter sounding and Shane McGuigan bagged the two-point leveller with the last kick of the half.
HT – Dublin 0-13 Derry 0-13
Half-time at Breffni Park where Galway are struggling to keep their championship alive.
Two penalties for Galway gave them opportunity to reel back in the All-Ireland champions, but no such luck for Padraic Joyce’s side.
HT – Galway 0-7 Armagh 0-15
30 MINS: Another penalty for Galway. Shane Walsh is pulled down on the run in on goal.
Robert Finnerty steps up and blasts the shot high for a point instead.
Galway 0-5 Armagh 0-12
25 MINS: Derry’s Conor Glass is flashed a yellow as Stephen Cluxton comes out of goal to attempt a two-point free for Dublin.
No doubt about it, straight over the bar for the Parnells man to put the Dubs three points ahead.
Dublin 0-11 Derry 0-8
24 MINS: Goal chance for Galway’s John Maher ends in a 45 after Armagh manage to get bodies in the way. Shane Walsh send the resulting kick to the right and wide.
Galway 0-4 Armagh 0-9
In Newry, Paddy Small has put Dublin back in front after points from Killian McGinnis and Cormac Costello.
Dublin 0-9 Derry 0-8
In the second Tailteann Cup quarter-final, Kildare have gone a point ahead against Offaly after a goal from James McGrath 22 minutes into the first half in Newbridge.
Kildare 1-4 Offaly 0-6
19 MINS: Armagh may already have guaranteed of their place in the quarter-finals but they’re showing no signs of letting up. Galway are struggling with Armagh’s pace so far as a blistering run up the centre ends in a point for Ross McQuillan.
Galway 0-2 Armagh 0-8
In Newry, Shane McGuigan has put Derry ahead with another two-point free for Derry.
Dublin 0-6 Derry 0-7
13 MINS: Derry close the gap with a two-point free from Shane McGuigan, who follows up with a point to two minutes later to make it a one-point game.
Dublin 0-6 Derry 0-5
8 MINS: Penalty for Galway amounts to nothing as Ethan Rafferty denies them a goal and a pull on the rebound trails wide.
Galway then manage to open their account with a point from Shane Walsh.
Galway 0-1 Armagh 0-4
Full-time in Brewster Park. Fermanagh book their spot in the Tailteann Cup semi-finals with a two-point win over Sligo.
FT – Fermanagh 0-21 Sligo 1-16
4 MINS: Similarly quick start from Armagh as they open up a three-point lead at Breffni Park.
Galway 0-0 Armagh 0-3
3 MINS: Paddy Small had a goal chance for Dublin but it’s a fraction too high and skimms the crossbar on its way over.
Dublin 0-4 Derry 0-0
1 MIN: And we’re off in Newry. Con O’Callaghan opens the scoring for Dublin 20 seconds from the throw-in, followed by another just shy of the one-minute mark from Killian McGinnis.
Dublin 0-2 Derry 0-0
Ian O’Riordan is at Galway v Armagh:
The sun is threatening to appear at Breffni Park as Galway prepare to fight for their survival in the championship in a replay of last year’s All-Ireland final against Armagh, which the Tribesmen lost by a point.
Armagh are already through to the quarter-finals, and manager Kieran McGeeney has made two late changes: Joe McElroy replaces Oisin Conaty at wing forward, and Cian McConville comes in for Stefan Campbell at corner forward.
For Galway, Conor Flaherty replaces Connor Gleeson in goal, and Peter Cooke replaces Paul Conroy at midfield.
Having lost to Dublin by a point and then drawn with Derry, it isn’t necessarily a must win for Galway. If Derry lose to Dublin, they might be okay on scoring difference.
Not to forget Galway and Armagh:
Confirmation of those Dublin changes:
And here’s how Derry start:
More from Gordon Manning ahead of Dublin v Derry:
The rain has stopped for now in Newry but conditions underfoot will be slippery for the start of this crunch All-Ireland SFC round-robin contest between Dublin and Derry.
The big news from Páirc Esler is that Con O’Callaghan starts. The Dublin captain missed their defeat to Armagh because of a hamstring injury suffered against Galway. He was named among the subs for today’s game but two prematch changes see him and Lee Gannon start, with Alex Gavin and Lorcan O’Dell dropping out.
Derry have made one change to the officially named team with Ben McKinless replacing Odhran Lynch in goal.
No rest for the wicked, we now turn our attention to Group 4 which has Dublin v Derry and Armagh v Galway both throwing in at 6.30pm.
Gordon Manning is on the scene in Newry. He’s sent through word that Con O’Callaghan is set to start for Dublin.
In the Tailteann Cup quarter-final, Fermanagh lead Sligo 0-15 1-10 15 minutes into the second half at Brewster Park. The second of the day’s quarter-finals, between Kildare and Offaly, also gets under way at 6.30pm.
So there we have it, Group 2 ends with Meath on top with five points, Kerry second on four, Cork third on two, and Roscommon fourth with one point.
That means Meath join Armagh in the quarter-finals while Kerry and Cork go to the preliminary quarter-finals.
70 MINS: Late drama in Portlaoise. A long dropping shot comes in to threaten Micheál Aodh Martin’s goal but he fists it out for a 45. Roscommon hold possession as the hooter blows, they need a two-pointer.
Cork dispossess and Seán Powter hoofs it out to end the game. End of the road for the Rossies, Cork earn a spot in the knock-out stages.
Here’s what Denis Walsh had to say from O’Moore Park:
A two-point win for Cork, 0-19 to 0-17, after a dramatic end to a pulsating second half. Needing only a draw to keep their season alive, Roscommon’s Diarmuid Murtagh attempted a two-point shot after the hooter had sounded, but Brian O’Driscoll dived on his boot and effected a block that was mopped up by Seán Powter, who booted the ball over the sideline to finish the game and ensure Cork’s progress.
Having led by four points at the break, Cork stretched their lead to six midway through the second half, but Roscommon came storming back in the final quarter and reduced the deficit to just a point with five minutes to go. Cork’s Cathal O’Mahony produced the only score in the remaining time and that was enough for Cork to progress as the third-placed team in Group 2.
FT – Roscommon 0-17 Cork 0-19
In Group 2’s second game, Meath have taken a huge win over Munster champions Kerry.
Who saw that coming?
FT – Meath 1-22 Kerry 0-16
67 MINS: Brilliant point from O’Mahony to put Cork two ahead. Ciarán Murtagh’s two-point effort swings right.
Roscommon 0-17 Cork 0-19
They’ve reached the break in the Tailteann Cup quarter-final between Fermanagh and Sligo.
Fermanagh lead, 0-14 to 1-6.
64 MINS: Nearing the last five minutes at O’Moore Park. Roscommon are charging forward in search of at least a draw which would see them through.
Daire Cregg knocks his fifth point over to make it a one-point game.
Roscommon 0-17 Cork 0-18
What’s going on at O’Connor Park. Mighty stuff from Meath who have extended their lead over Kerry to 9 points with 61 minutes gone.
A two-pointer from Conor Duke followed by goal from Bryan Menton may have put the win beyond Jack O’Connor’s men.
Meath 1-21 Kerry 0-15
A win for Dublin over Kildare in Newbridge sees them take a place in the All-Ireland SHC quarter-finals. A big challenge lies ahead for Niall Ó Ceallacháin’s side as they’ll face Limerick in the last eight.
FT – Kildare 0-13 Dublin 3-25
52 MINS: Mark Cronin knocks over his fifth point to push Cork six points ahead, only for Diarmuid Murtagh to quickly claw one back for the Rossies.
Roscommon 0-12 Cork 0-17
Kerry have launched their comeback at O’Connor Park. The Kingdom now trail Meath 0-16 to 0-13.
A straight route to the quarter-finals is what’s at stake there, a loss wouldn’t see either side out of the championship.
Twenty-five minutes on the clock at Brewster Park. Fermanagh and Sligo are level, 0-9 to 1-6, in the Tailteann Cup quarter-final.
Niall Murphy with the goal for Sligo.
44 MINS: Eddie Nolan returns to the field after a blood substitution to send a scorcher of the bar for Roscommon.
O’Moore Park is getting a taste of all the seasons this afternoon, the sun has broken through but the wind is having an impact on proceedings.
Roscommon 0-11 Cork 0-13
They’re into the last 10 minutes in Newbridge. Dublin now 2-21 to 0-11 ahead against Kildare in the All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-final.
37 MINS: Quick start for Roscommon. Daire Cregg adds a point after one from Dylan Ruane to cut their deficit to two.
Roscommon 0-8 Cork 0-10
Cork and Roscommon return to the field for the second half. The Rebels lead by four points in Portlaoise.
Reminder, winner here stays in the championship, loser is knocked out. A draw would also be enough to see the Rossies through at Cork’s expense.
Another game to throw in to the mix now. Fermanagh and Sligo meet in the first of the weekend’s Tailteann Cup quarter-finals.
They’ve just thrown in at Brewster Park.
In Newbridge, there’s 44 minutes gone in the All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-final; Dublin lead Kildare 2-17 to 0-7.
Half-time dispatches from Denis Walsh at O’Moore Park:
Cork lead Roscommon by four points at half-time in Portlaoise, 0-10 to 0-6. Cork kicked the last five scores of the first half and held Roscommon scoreless for 13 minutes, building an advantage that didn’t look likely for most of the first half.
Roscommon started the brighter and led by two points early on, but Cork took a grip on Roscommon’s kick-outs in the second quarter and surged clear with a couple of points apiece for Ian Maguire and Mark Cronin late in the half.
Cork finish the first half with a flourish to lead Roscommon 0-10 to 0-6 at half-time at O’Moore Park.
In the second Group 2 fixture, Meath have a 0-14 to 0-8 half-time lead against Kerry at O’Connor Park.
HT – Roscommon 0-6 Cork 0-10
HT – Kerry 0-8 Meath 0-14
Huge turnaround at O’Connor Park where Meath have put themselves six points in advance of Kerry, 0-13 to 0-7, aided by two two-point scores from Eoghan Frayne and Ruairí Kinsella in quick succession.
Two minutes left in the first half there.
28 MINS: Great chance from Rory Maguire for Cork, denied a goal only for a slight deflection from Roscommon goalkeeper Conor Carroll to send it over the bar.
A free from Cronin pushes Cork’s lead to two points.
Roscommon 0-6 Cork 0-8
23 MINS: The sides are evenly matched in Portlaoise. Roscommon talisman Enda Smith puts his side ahead only for Cork to offer a quick reply from Mark Cronin.
Roscommon 0-6 Cork 0-6
They’ve reached the 20-minute mark at O’Connor Park where Kerry remain two points to the good against Meath, 0-7 to 0-5.
In Newbridge, Dublin lead Kildare 2-14 to 0-5 in their All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-final.
HT – Kildare 0-5 Dublin 2-14
17 MINS: Enda Smith is dropping back deep to aid the Roscommon defence. At the other end Senan Lambe points to restore parity for the Rossies.
Roscommon 0-4 Cork 0-4
At O’Connor Park, Kerry lead Meath 0-5 to 0-3 with 13 minutes on the clock.
11 MINS: Cork’s Seán McDonnell gets a point to put his side ahead, unlucky not to have found the net with his shot.
Roscommon 0-2 Cork 0-3
Twenty-five minutes gone in Newbridge where Kildare are hosting Dublin in the All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-finals. The Dubs lead 2-8 to 0-4 after goals from Ronan Hayes and Diarmuid Ó Dulaing.
In Portlaoise, Brian O’Driscoll has pulled Cork level with Roscommon, it’s now 0-2 apiece.
4 MINS: Donie Smith opens the scoring for Roscommon at O’Moore Park, followed soon after by another from Daire Cregg.
Roscommon 0-2 Cork 0-0
Anthem finishes at O’Moore Park and Roscommon v Cork in Group 2 is under way.
Denis Walsh is in Portlaoise, he has this for us:
For Cork and Roscommon the permutations have boiled down to this: Cork must win to stay alive in the championship; Roscommon would limp into the knock-out stages with a draw. Since they beat Cork in the league in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on March 1st, Roscommon’s only competitive victory has been against London. Cork have already lost three times in the championship.
No late change on the Cork team, but Donie Shine starts for Roscommon in a change from the published line-up.
Later today will see the ‘Group of Death’, aka Group 4, wrapped up. Armagh, having taken two wins from two games, have already guaranteed a quarter-final spot for themselves. Their group-mates, however, have been left battling for survival.
In his column this week, Darragh O’Sé had very little sympathy for their plight: “For Dublin, Galway and Derry, this is the weekend when the chickens come home to roost. One of them will be gone out of the championship on Saturday night. They’ll only have themselves to blame, as well.”
Read his thoughts in full below:
Fifteen minutes to throw-in at O’Connor Park, where Munster champions Kerry face Leinster runners-up Meath.
Here’s how the sides line out:
In the All-Ireland SFC, Saturday is the turn of Group 2 and Group 4.
The two fixtures in each group will be played at the same time – 4.15pm throw-ins for Group 2, 6.30pm for Group 4 – so come 8pm we’ll know our first two quarter-finalists and four preliminary quarter-finalists.
We already know Armagh are through to the last eight, so that top-spot battle is only a concern for Group 2.
Here’s how things are looking in table terms:
Three games are due to get under way in the next 20 minutes – Kildare v Dublin in the hurling as well as both SFC Group 2 meetings.
We’ll be focusing on Roscommon v Cork, but we’ll keep you posted on Kerry v Meath and the hurling in Newbridge with regular score updates.
On that note, here’s how Cork line out in Portlaoise:
And here’s the Roscommon starting XV:
In the All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-finals, Tipperary have secured passage to the last eight after a 3-32 to 0-18 win over Laois at O’Moore Park.
Liam Cahill’s side will now meet Galway in the All-Ireland quarter-finals on the weekend of June 21st/22nd.
That same weekend, Limerick will play the victor of today’s second preliminary quarter-final between Kildare and Dublin, which throws in at 4pm in Newbridge.
There’s a lot on the line in the football championship, the results of this weekend deciding what counties go on to the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals and quarter-finals, and who’ll be whiling away the summer.
Of the 16 teams in it, we’ll only be saying farewell to four. Eight will go to the preliminary quarter-finals, and the top-placed teams from each group will go straight to the last eight.
Wondering who’s likely to be sticking around for the knock-out stages? Us too. Fear not, I took a look at the permutations:
