Three sporting events to watch this week: Your handy guide to sport on television

Guide to sport on television (Monday – Sunday, Jan 6th – 12th)

Golf

A Ryder Cup-style, Seve Trophy-inspired tournament takes place in Abu Dhabi, UAE this week. The Team Cup involves 10 players from Britain and Ireland, including team captain Justin Rose, taking on 10 from the rest of Europe, including captain Francesco Molinari. While Shane Lowry and Séamus Power took part in the first edition of the competition, this time around Antrim’s Tom McKibbin is the only non-English representative on Rose’s team. – Friday-Sunday, Sky Sports

Rugby

It’s a bit early in this 2024-25 Champions Cup to have a season-defining game, but the meeting of two of the favourites – La Rochelle and Leinster – at the weekend in France is undoubtedly a massive tie for both sides. Leinster were beaten by Ronan O’Gara’s side in the 2021 Semi-final, and the 2022 and 2023 Finals, but thumped the French team in last year’s quarter-final. La Rochelle don’t look as formidable this season as previous years, but, regardless, they love big European days like this. – Sunday, Premier Sports

Snooker

The second Triple Crown event of the season, the 2025 Masters, begins at Alexandra Palace in London at the weekend. First held in 1975, it involves the top 16 players in the world rankings - which, unfortunately, no longer includes an Irish representative. First up on Sunday is a big clash – with last year’s champion Ronnie O’Sullivan (who has a record eight Masters titles) taking on two-time champion John Higgins. It was 30 years ago when O’Sullivan won his first Masters title. He beat Higgins in that 1995 decider. – Jan 12th-19th, BBC & Eurosport
