Traffic and urban sprawl

Sir, – The planned traffic layout that will reduce to one the number of lanes available to private cars and commercial vehicles attempting to enter the city along the quays from the west represents another step in Dublin City Council’s poorly thought-out ideological war on the car. Thanks to said council’s long-held and unjustified stance against high-rise buildings, Dublin is not a dense city, but one of sprawling suburbs, and while there is public transport available, this is not always practical for myriad reasons.

As Dublin faces competition from other major European cities for post-Brexit business, now is not the time for the city to be made deliberately less appealing. – Yours, etc,
