Museum opening hours

Sir, – Further to James Mahon’s request (June 30th) to have museums open to visitors until 6pm, my son, on a short visit home from abroad, recently visited the Cork Public Museum to find that the closing time of 5pm has been changed to 4pm! And no, the Cork City Council website does not reflect the change. – Yours, etc,

ERIC O’BRIEN,

Douglas,

Cork.

Sir, – James Mahon (June 30th) suggests that museums and galleries extend their evening opening hours to facilitate visitors. It has long been the practice for the National Gallery of Ireland to open until 8.30 on Thursdays. This contrasts with the four sites covered by the National Museum of Ireland, which restrict public admissions to less than six hours a day on average. This is the most restricted public access regime for any comparable institution in Europe. Worse still, the “family friendly” National Museum of Ireland, over the four-day Easter holiday, managed to open for 10 hours in total or, on average, for 2½ hours per day. – Yours, etc,

REG McCABE,

Killiney,

Co Dublin.
