High energy costs and the ESB

Sir, – The Government is “concerned” with the huge increases being levied on gas and electricity.

It is a great pity that when the government was merrily dismantling the ESB – regarded by many at the time as one of the most efficient semi-State companies in Europe – and handing the sector over to the “market”, warnings about expensive energy charges that would most certainly ensue fell on deaf ears.

Ireland now has the fourth highest electricity charges in Europe.

And here’s another prediction that is really a no-brainer; it is we who will now pick up the tab as the Government comes to the rescue to protect the profits of these private energy companies they created.
