Gender equality among solicitors

Sir, – The only way in which Terri Kelly (March 19th) can state that "women solicitors are not victims of a structural inequality" while also pointing out that women comprise more than half that profession, and yet somehow, for reasons other than structural inequality, comprise just over a third of partners, is if she adopts the position that women are not advancing through the ranks of the profession on the basis of merit. As Ms Kelly points out, change does not happen overnight. It has, however, been 95 years since the first woman was admitted to the roll of solicitors in Ireland. – Yours, etc,

CIARA NÍ GHABHANN,
