GAA and analysis of amateur players

Sir, – GAA president Larry McCarthy (September 22nd) urges all "to practise restraint in their comments and analysis of the GAA amateur players as it may lead to long-lasting impact on their lives".

I agree totally with the president and suggest as a start to discontinue The Irish Times “player rating system of measuring amateur players one out of 10 for their performance in the match”. Amateur players who give all to a match for no reward should not be subjected to public rating that is the manager’s job in private. After the All-Ireland final you individually named six Mayo team members including the subs as, on average, performing poorly.

I doubt very much if they went out to play poorly

I really felt for those guys when you individualised each member in an amateur sport.
