Feminism and social inequalities

Sir, – Further to Larissa Nolan's article "Women can't be told anything anymore for fear of offence" (Opinion & Analysis, October 12th), how can we call ourselves equal when we know that the gender pay gap still exists; that our elected representatives are disproportionately male; that women are denied bodily autonomy; and that women continue to experience high levels of domestic violence and sexual abuse?

The inequalities that continue to exist in our society are largely systemic. Feminists don’t see themselves as victims, but recognise that society will never change without intervention. If we don’t introduce quotas, or march on the streets, or speak up for ourselves, many women will remain second-class citizens. Until all women are equal, feminism remains relevant and wholly necessary.

It’s not that we’re offended; we’re angry. And so we should be. – Yours, etc,

HEATHER BROWNING,
