Dangers of walking on country roads

A chara, – As someone who regularly walks and runs on short stretches of roads without footpaths in Co Wexford, it seems that as Covid-19 restrictions ease so does the standard of driving on our countryside’s roads.

Too often, road vehicles travelling at an inappropriate speed do not give pedestrians adequate room as they pass, or accidently cross to the other side of the road as they take a corner too quickly endangering pedestrians and other road users alike.

As relatively more of us stay in Ireland and mobilise for our summer holidays, I was encouraged to hear a public safety announcement from the Road Safety Authority on radio, highlighting the concepts pertinent to safer longer distance driving.

However I feel there is a need to extend this campaign to educate drivers on the specifics of countryside driving on our narrow and often windy roads.
