Belfast Agreement and Brexit

Sir, – The recent comments of Brexit supporters disparaging the Belfast Agreement are a red herring. These comments are not about the future of Northern Ireland, rather they are intended to give the UK some theoretical leverage over the Republic in the second phase of the Brexit talks.

They are a transparent bluff by people desperate to make the Brexit talks less one-sided.

They have already tried this ruse by disparaging security co-operation with the other EU states. They did not flinch, and neither should we.

That being said, the need for politicians in Northern Ireland to get their act together remains, and neither side currently deserves much sympathy. – Yours, etc,
