The soaring cost of car insurance

Premium rose more than 17 per cent, far outstripping inflation

Sir, – Inflation how are you? Today’s Central Statistics Office figures show consumer price inflation rose to an 18-month high in September at 2.7 per cent up from 2 per cent the previous month.

Funnily enough, the car insurance quotation I received due for payment this month increased by 17.36 per cent in the 12 months from last year.

Three other independent bona fide quotes on a like-for-like basis received yesterday were even more. Is this control of the car insurance industry a simple cartel in action or a good old Irish rip-off again? Very suspicious. – Yours, etc,
