Why are there so many charities?

Rationalisation and consolidation

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – I refer to the letter dated October 16th from the charity umbrella group The Wheel. It states there are almost 12,000 organisations in this sector. When one takes the population of the Republic, this means there is one organisation for every 425 people. What value are some of these organisations adding to society, given this statistic? Is it not time for the Charities Regulator to call this out and seek rationalisation and consolidation of the sector and ensure the funds collected from the public are maximised in providing the necessary services? – Yours, etc,

PAUL KEENAN,

Killiney,

Co Dublin.
