Sir, – Much as I admire Fintan O’Toole, I’m beginning to find it tiresome that he never misses the opportunity to criticise the Catholic Church (”Fintan O’Toole: JFK embodied an idea of what Ireland aspired to be, Biden embodies an idea of what we used to be”, Opinion & Analysis, April 12th).
As a woman I have some serious reason to criticise the church, but I do recognise the values and goodness that they have brought to Ireland, and the immense contribution the church, through religious congregations, has made to community education, health and social services here.
Does this not need to be mentioned occasionally? – Yours, etc,
SHEILA DEEGAN,
