Motorists have been warned to expect flooding as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms cross the country this evening and tomorrow, according to the National Safety Council (NSC).

Met Éireann said some areas are facing rainfall of 50mm in places over the next 24 to 36 hours.

The south, southwest and southeast are the areas most at risk although the NSC warned all areas are facing reduced visibility, flooding and slippery road surfaces due to rain.

The NSC has advised drivers to use dipped headlights at all times and to allow an increased distance between vehicles.

Hopefully, this will not mean the fulfilling of the St Swithin's Day legend. The 1000-year-old weather prophesy is that if July 15th is wet (and it was) we could face 40 days of rain.
