Holiday weekend traffic is expected to be busy on all routes out of the capital today. According to the AA, many Dubliners taking weekends in the regions are now starting their journeys on Thursdays to avoid the peak-travel times.

The AA also expects traffic to be heavier than usual heading into Dublin due to the Heineken Green Energy festival.

Crowds are expected in Killarney today and Sunday as the Rally of the Lakes gets under way. Significant delays are expected.

Race meetings are due to be held in Kilkenny on Sunday; in Kildare on Monday; and in Limerick on Sunday and Monday, with large crowds expected. in each location. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between the Airport roundabout and Pinnock Hill roundabout on the N1 heading north out of Dublin.

The AA is advising people to leave plenty of time for their return journeys on Monday and to avoid travelling at peak times if at all possible.

Work on the replacement of East Wall road bridge will result in the rail line being closed between Connolly Station and Clontarf Road from 01.10 a.m. today. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, northside DART and Drogheda suburban services will operate a limited timetable, with bus transfers between Tara Street and Clontarf Road.

The Belfast Enterprise will operate a full timetable.
