More than 50 jobs are to be created in Athlone after a US software company announced plans to establish a technical support and shared services unit in the town.

The MAPICS Incorporated base will create 55 jobs over the next five years in the software localisation and testing area as well as IT support and financial management.

The new centre will serve MAPICS's Europe, Middle East and Asia markets. The company - which has its main headquarters in Georgia - has another major international operation in Singapore

Making the announcement, the Tanaiste said the IDA-backed project would enhance Athlone as an attractive location for software companies.
