Motorists in the north Midlands and in Northern Ireland have been warned of difficult driving conditions following heavy overnight snowfalls.

Despite a gradual thaw, care is required while driving in Cavan, Longford, Louth, Monaghan and Westmeath.

The main Belfast-to-Derry road is open but extreme caution is required at Glenshane Pass, according to the police.

In Northern Ireland, motorists face more difficult conditions with snow and heavy showers forecast for this afternoon.

Many people were unable to get to work and rail, bus and ferry services were disrupted. There have also been delays on some flights into Northern Ireland.

Met Éireann has warned of more snow showers today, particularly in northern areas, with widespread frost tonight resulting in icy conditions on the roads.
