The EU has been accused of hypocrisy in its comparative treatment of Ukraine and Egypt. Independent TD Richard Boyd Barrett claimed the EU "jumps up and down" over self-determination and human rights in Ukraine and imposes sanctions, but acted differently with Egypt.

Referring to the 529 Muslims who “have been sentenced to death by mass political execution by a brutal military regime based on trumped-up political charges”, he asked “where are the sanctions or calls for urgent action in this case”.

Mr Boyd Barrett said if the Russians decided to execute 529 people in Ukraine tomorrow, “there would be emergency sessions in the UN, immediate sanctions sabre rattling and probably talk of military action”.

'High priority'
Minister of State Paschal Donohoe said the verdicts were "an issue of high priority for Ireland". He pointed out, however, that they had yet to be confirmed. Mr Donohoe said "the Grand Mufti, who is required to issue a judgment under Islamic law, is due to decide whether to confirm this judgment towards the end of this month".
