The parents of students who are undertaking examinations this summer have been warned to look out for signs of exam stress and to look after the emotional well-being of their children.

High expectations and pressure from parents, teachers or friends can push students to the brink, particularly when they are worried their results may not meet high expectations.

Parents are being advised that learning how to recognise when their son or daughter is under stress is one of the first steps towards dealing with it.

Suzanne Costello, director of Samaritans Ireland, said: "We are suggesting to both students and parents not to neglect their emotional health during exam time. It is as important to maintain our emotional health during times of stress as our physical health. Regular talking to family and friends can alleviate many pressures students may be experiencing."

The Samaritans says that signs of exam stress include changes to eating or sleeping patterns, loss of concentration, self-deprecation and panic attacks. Parents have been asked to remember that their attitude will affect their children's emotions during this stressful time and panicking or pressuring students is not advised. And it's not just hard workers and high achievers who get stressed out, according to the Samaritans. Students with a more moderate track record may be the ones who get most upset because they want to achieve and fear they can't.

Students are being advised that the best way to make it through the examination period is to eat healthily, exercise regularly, get a reasonable amount of sleep and to talk through any problems with someone they trust.
