Oral hearing scheduled for proposed south Dublin ring road

An Bord Pleanála is to hold an oral hearing on the proposed Monkstown ring road in south Co Dublin.

An Bord Pleanála is to hold an oral hearing on the proposed Monkstown ring road in south Co Dublin.

The proposed route will link Carysfort Avenue and Deansgrange Road via Fleurville, Rowanbyrn and Brookville Park and will include the demolition of Yankee Terrace, a row of 11 mid-19th-century cottages.

The proposal contradicts an objective in the current Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Development Plan, which seeks to retain the terrace.

The construction of the 1.1km road will complete a link between Stillorgan and Dún Laoghaire town and is designed to provide relief to local roads.

It also includes the demolition of five other properties on Newtownpark Avenue and Annaville Terrace.

Public consultation began in September, and An Bord Pleanála has so far received 209 submissions on the proposal, 14 related to the compulsory purchase orders made for the 16 homes.

An Taisce was among the objectors, raising concerns including the loss of Yankee Terrace and the effect of traffic on surrounding homes and local schools.

"It would be An Taisce's opinion that these cottages should be afforded special protection in a future review of the development plan," the submission said.

"Should the board approve this scheme it should be realigned . . . to facilitate the cottages and the other houses below them."

An Taisce also queried the need for the proposed road.

An Bord Pleanála has appointed Philip Jones as inspector for the project, and he will hear evidence in relation to the submissions. The hearing will begin at 11am on January 25th in the Gresham Hotel.
