Dubliners have given Luas an "overwhelming vote of confidence" with a total of 38,000 people visiting the first French-made tram while it was on display last week in Merrion Square, according to a spokesman for the project.

"Visitors were taken by the spaciousness, colour and design of the first of 40 trams which will service the two lines from Tallaght to Connolly Station and from Sandyford Industrial Estate to St. Stephen's Green," he said.

"For a number of the visitors who boarded the tram, it evoked memories of the old tram system which served Dublin so well in the past and they welcomed the initiative of implementing a new tram system for the city".

The 30-metre tram is now garaged for testing and commissioning.
