Gardaí have appealed for assistance following a fatal road traffic collision in Cork this morning in which a 27-year-old motorcyclist was killed.

The collision happened on the main South Ring Road as the motorcyclist was travelling eastwards from Bishopstown towards the Jack Lynch Tunnel at 11.15am.

The motorcyclist had just passed over the Kinsale Road Flyover when he was involved in a collision with a car travelling in the same direction.

The motorcyclist was thrown from his motorbike and ended up in the westbound carriageway. He was pronounced dead the scene.

Gardaí have closed two lanes on both carriageways to allow forensic crash investigators examine the scene.

Gardaí have kept a single lane in each direction open to facilitate traffic but they have urged motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Gardaí have appealed to the public for assistance and are anxious to speak to the driver of a black BMW coupe travelling eastbound at the time of the crash.
