One staff member said: “There are no words to describe what we are going through. It is unbelievable to think his granddad died at the same spot.”

Gardaí renewed their appeal for anyone who was in the vicinity of the pub or who saw anything that could be of assistance to contact them.

Mr Whelan’s grandfather Don McCullough had lived up a lane opposite the inn. He died in May 1991.

Mr Whelan, the eldest of two sons, was a student at Drogheda Institute of Further Education.
