A multi-agency investigation has been initiated after two people were found dead at a caravan site in Newcastle, Co Down.

The PSNI did not release specific details of how the pair, who are understood to be an elderly couple, died.

However, South Down SDLP MP Margaret Ritchie said a possible cause is carbon monoxide poisoning.

PSNI Inspector David McClements said police attended Bonnys Caravan Park on the Tullybrannigan Road, Newcastle, Co Down at about 3pm where the bodies were discovered.

The deaths are also being investigated by the North’s Health and Safety Executive. In a statement, it said it was “looking into the circumstances of a fatal incident at a caravan park in the Newcastle area”.

Ms Ritchie said that she was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden deaths. “I understand that police are treating it as suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at this stage,” she said.

“I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the families of these two people who are undoubtedly going through a deeply traumatic and difficult time. I have no doubt that this tight knit community will rally round and support them throughout the coming days and weeks,” added Ms Ritchie.

DUP South Down MLA Jim Wells said: “I would like to extend my sympathies to the families of these two people.”

While Newcastle is more popular in the summer time for holiday makers, some caravans in Bonnys are occupied through the year.
