Truck driver killed in road collision outside Mallow named

Gardaí have named the man who died when his truck collided with a number of cars on the N20 Cork-Limerick Road just outside Mallow on Sunday afternoon.

Roland Sweetnam (72) from Kilmuckey, Castlemartyr, Co Cork was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision just south of Mallow at around 1pm.

Mr Sweetnam was driving towards Cork having driven through the Killarney Road roundabout in Mallow when his truck went out of control and collided with four cars.

Some seven people in the oncoming vehicles suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to Cork University Hospital while a horse being towed by one of the cars was killed.

Mr Sweetnam’s body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem today.

His son, who is in his 20s and was with him in the truck, was uninjured in the collision.

Mr Sweetnam’s death brings to six the number of people who have died in six separate road traffic collisions on Cork roads since the start of the year.
