Golfer Shane Lowry has lent his support to a campaign which aims to raise €1 million for homeless families on Friday.

Lowry has launched the One for Ireland campaign which will see 1,500 retailers across the country participate in an endeavour which will encourage the public to add €1 to their grocery bill.

The campaign has been called “1 cause. 1 euro. 1 day”. The money will be targeted at homeless charities and specifically their efforts to help the 1,800 homeless children in Ireland today.

Eight homeless projects will be supported including those run by St Vincent de Paul, the Peter McVerry Trust and Focus Ireland.

The participating shops are Spar, XL, Londis, Mace, Applegreen, Fresh and Starbucks.

Lowry said his career as a golfer made him appreciate how lucky he was. “I have got a nice home, but there are a lot of people less fortunate than myself. The idea of everyone giving €1 is not a lot out of people’s pockets. Asking for anything more might be a bit difficult. It’s a great idea.”

Lowry got married in New York last week to his fiancee Wendy Honner after participating in the Masters in Augusta where he hit a hole-in-one.
