The young man who died at the Electric Picnic music festival has been named.

Phil McConnell (20) from Malahide in Dublin had a pre-existing cardiac condition, the festival’s organisers said.

A full investigation is underway into the circumstances of his death has commenced.

He was found unconscious near tents in the Andy Warhol campsite by festival staff at around 1am yesterday.

He was then transferred to the Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise where he was pronounced dead. A postmortem will be carried out in the coming days.

Gardaí are investing the death. They said while the cause was still unclear it did not appear to be as a result of violence.

Approximately 25,000 people attended the first day of the festival last night and that number is expected to increase by 10,000 for today and tomorrow.

Meanwhile, festival organisers warned those in attendance about a batch of ecstacy ecstasy type pills believed to be circulating at the event.

Gardaí are understood to have seized some of the drugs this afternoon. The seizure was not connected to the death of the young man.

A spokeswoman said: “There may be some potentially dodgy ‘blue ghost’ pills circulating onsite...We urge picnickers to be very careful. Stay safe.”
