A man has suffered serious but non-life-threatening in a shooting in Cork overnight.

The man, is in his early 20s, suffered a gunshot wound to his buttocks/lower back area outside a house at Churchfield Avenue on the city's northside just before 4am.

Gardaí and the emergency services were alerted and the man was found injured and was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for his injuries.

Gardaí preserved the scene and garda technical experts began a forensic examination of the scene in the hope of obtaining some DNA or other evidence that might help them identify the gunman.

Gardaí have begun door to door inquiries to see if anyone heard or saw anything while they have also begun canvassing houses in the area to see if anyone has CCTC cameras that could assist them.

One avenue of inquiry is that the victim may have been called out to meet someone. Gardaí hope to be given permission by doctors to speak to the victim when he is well enough to talk.

They also hope to check his phone to see who he may have been in contact with in the hours before the shooting, while they also hope to trace his movements on Friday night into Saturday morning.

At this point, gardaí are keeping an open mind on whether the gunman acted alone or whether he had an accomplice.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. They are particularly keen for anyone with camera footage (including dash-cam) to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

Officers investigating the shooting can be contacted at Gurranabrahrer Garda Station on 021 4946200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
