The body of a man in his 20s has been recovered from the water off the coast of Cork.

The Castletownbere RNLI launched at about 1.35pm to search for the man and was joined by Derrynane inshore rescue and the Castletownbere coastguard.

A body was sighted in the water at Traverra at about 2.30pm and was recovered by a local vessel at about 3pm a mile-and-a half off Travarra, in the Beara Peninsula.

His body was then transferred onto the RNLI lifeboat and returned to Castletownbere.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor.

Commenting on the call-out Castletownbere RNLI Deputy Coxswain Paul Stevens said, "This is a terrible tragedy and we extend our sympathies to the young man's family and friends."

The man’s death is the 11th attributed to drowning since the onset of the hot weather in recent weeks.

Separately, the Malin Head Coast guard have recovered the body of a woman at Roxtown Harbour, Co Donegal and are searching for a child who may have been with her.

The woman’s body was discovered on the beach north of Lough Swilly shortly before 6.30pm. People in the area reported seeing a small child with her a short time earlier. Lough Swilly life boat units, units from Greencastle and the Sligo coast guard helicopter are involved in the search.
