Man critical after violent clash involving baseball bats

Incident occurred in broad daylight in the Dublin suburb of Swords

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after becoming involved in a violent clash with another man involving the use of baseball bats.

The incident occurred in broad daylight in the Dublin suburb of Swords in front of several passersby.

At approximately 12.50pm the man, believed to be of African nationality, sustained serious head injuries during the dispute with another male, aged in his thirties and also believed to be from Africa.

The injured party was rushed to Beaumont Hosptial by ambulance where he is understood to be fighting for his life.

The second man was arrested at the scene and is being held at Coolock Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardaí have recovered two baseball bats from the scene which has been sealed off for a full forensic examination.

Due to the time and location of the incident, there were thought to be numerous witnesses to the fight.
