A man in his 20s has died following a single vehicle road crash in Co Longford on Saturday.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly after 10.40am after a car was found partially submerged in water at Clonfin, off the road between Granard and Balinalee (R194).

Gardaí said it is understood the car left the road and stuck metal fencing before entering the water.

Following a search operation, the body of a man in his 20s – understood to have been the sole occupant of the car – was recovered from the water.

The man’s body was removed to the morgue at Mullingar Hospital and the coroner was notified. Gardaí said the road was closed on Saturday night to facilitate an examination by forensic collision investigators, with local diversions in place.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to come forward, including those who may have camera or dash cam footage from the area at the time of the incident.
