A young lifeguard has died after getting into difficulty while surfing in Co Clare on Monday.

It is understood he got into difficulty while surfing in Lough Donnell, near Quilty in Co Clare, on Monday morning. The man, aged in his 20s, was a well-known lifeguard in the area.

The Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter R115 rescued the man from the water, at which point he was in a “serious condition”, sources said.

The Department of Transport said the Coast Guard airlifted the man to University Hospital Limerick. The young man was given CPR en route, but was pronounced dead later on Monday.
